John Potter
John Potter was born on Merseyside and holds degrees in fine art from Chelsea and Camberwell colleges. Following his involvement in the 1980s Liverpool music scene as a writer and performer, he had a successful career in the arts working in leading London art galleries but now focuses entirely on his own practice as an artist.
John’s work encompasses painting, print making and projection to create pictures which explore notions of time, memory and mutability. He works primarily in the studio, where he plans, develops, composes and transmutes his experiences into paint but has also staged performances in which he paints live, accompanied by self-composed music. John would like viewers of his paintings to look at them as if they were listening to music – to move away from seeking representation or a narrative and allow themselves to respond emotionally.
