G. Calvert
“G. Calvert uses figures to create an uneasy dialogue. The work shows talk, wordless speech or gesture, always within the context of a dramatic situation. Family, culture, and politics inform this work. The images explore the difference between self-image and what is received through the filters of media and memory.” Angela Kingston, catalogue, “with this ring…”, IKON Gallery
I play with the Social – politics, celebrity, power. Images are pillaged, lifted from the street and the media, iconic images are quoted (Goya, Manet) – to capture individuals as they experience, project or internalise their unease in relation to political and personal life.
G.Calvert studied at Goldsmiths’ and Newport College of Art (Painting and Film Making). She curated and exhibited in ‘Pandora’s Box’ national touring exhibition of Womens’ Art in 1985.
